You know I've been wondering about the origin of the phrase "wait for it..." or if it even has an origin.

My friend keeps saying and he doesn't remember where he got it from. And everyone I know that I ask, remember hearing it too, but can't pinpoint it.

I ran a few searchs on the best search engine around, Alta Vista http://altavista.com however, the only common queries I was getting was the movie Van Helsing, and I don't remeber seeing that movie so I don't think it's in there. And mostly it was people of fourms says, "I'm waiting for it dude" or whatever.

I'm starting to beleive this'll be on those phrases that'll stay around for decades, like the "Wax on - Wax off" phrase that was in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie. Or maybe that one came from a commercial, lol.

I thought "wax on, wax off" was from Karate Kid. And what are these turtles that have been mutated by young Ninja that you speak of? tongue.gif

lol smile.gif i remember rushing home from school as a kid to watch TMNT biggrin.gif

but sting's right, the wax on comment is from the karate kid (remember all the beautiful classic cars?)

"wait for it" is a saying that i dont think you will be able to track down its origins, but i recall it being in the movie braveheart where theyt used spears against the heavy cavalry

I've never seen Braveheart. So Mel Gibson said, "Wait for it.....wait for it"? Twice?

"Steady!" and a few "HOLD!", but no "wait for it":

Now there was a song by Howard Jones where he says "Wait for it, wait for it, give it some time", but I doubt that would be the source either http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9uYu4HZip0

GOT IT, it's from Kindergarten Cop, when he is teaching his kids to "wait for" the wistle.

Here is a link to the script...

http://www.script-o-rama.com/movie_scripts...arzenegger.html

Here's an excerpt...

Now, the first thing the
deputy trainees have to learn

is to freeze
whenever you hear this.

Now, the next time you hear
this whistle...

each one of you get
one toy.

How many?

One!

Good. Then bring it back
to the carpet..

pronto.

Ready?

Wait for it.

Wait for it.

Sit down.

Ready?

Go quickly.

Get your toy.

Well, after researching this some more, it appears that the line has made it into numerous movies. It was in the Robin Williams movie "Patch Adams" when he is surprising people by saying hi to them.

It also appears in the Adam Sandler movie, Big Daddy, when he is teaching his kid to throw the stick at the right time to trip the rollerblader.

It has also appeared in the TV show M*A*S*H when the character Radar could sense the helo's coming and no one else could. He said "wait for it wait for it" then the others could hear it.

Finally, it most recently appeared in the Simpsons when Homer was looking for the end of the world.

*Some say it was in the Ghostbusters but that has yet to be validated*

_yes, I am bored at work today_

I think I remember hearing that in Ghostbusters as well.

Ghostbusters may be the oldest reference I can think of, personally. I use the 'Wait for it, Wait for it' phrase fairly often myself. smile.gif Usually playing military games with friends.
