copy your icon file to the HUD folder found in Menu\HUD\Texture\Ingame\Weapons\Icons\Hud in the Menu_client.zip.

Edit the weapon's tweak file from the Weapons\Handheld\your_weapon\ folder in the Objects_server.zip.

Locate the following lines:
rem ---BeginComp:WeaponHud ---
ObjectTemplate.createComponent WeaponHud
ObjectTemplate.weaponHud.weaponIcon Ingame\Weapons\Icons\Hud\usrif_g36c.tga
ObjectTemplate.weaponHud.altWeaponIcon Ingame\Weapons\Icons\Hud\usrif_g36c_mini.tga
ObjectTemplate.weaponHud.selectIcon Ingame\Weapons\Icons\Hud\Selection\usrif_g36c.tga

And replace them with these:
rem ---BeginComp:WeaponHud ---
ObjectTemplate.createComponent WeaponHud
ObjectTemplate.weaponHud.weaponIcon Ingame\Weapons\Icons\Hud\your_icon.tga
ObjectTemplate.weaponHud.altWeaponIcon Ingame\Weapons\Icons\Hud\usrif_g36c_mini.tga
ObjectTemplate.weaponHud.selectIcon Ingame\Weapons\Icons\Hud\your_icon.tga

If it does crash even after your new .tga is included in the zip, try making a copy of that tga and renaming it to a .dds. Then drop it into the same zip.

Remove the \Selection portion of the file location so that it only points to the HUD folder instead of a Selection folder inside the HUD folder. Or create a Selection folder and drop your icon there.
