Is anyone here a fan of the Fallout games? I bought New Vegas a few months ago and it's quite addictive. (248 hours played) I subsequently bought Fallout 3 and the two original games, though admittedly I haven't made much progress in the latter two. The game's exclusively single-player (though I heard Interplay might be making a Fallout MMO) and there's a ton of mods out there (Just check out the Fallout 3 and New Vegas Nexi! No Mutants Allowed has some stuff for the original games, if you're in the olds-school mood...)
And, for some eye candy, here's a shot of the New Vegas Strip from me, coming out of the Ultra-Luxe... ![]() |

Fallout 3 is as good as any of the other fallout games, but its AI is like that of Oblivion, which means it's kind of poor. It reminds me of a watch with a spring that's too short and causes the watch to run down quickly. And the voice acting continues Bethesda's tradition of being the worst in the industry.
That said, I don't really see anyone trying to do better in the same genre. Bethesda has a monopoly on the PC, at least. Fallout 2 is the pretty good story wise. But the fallout 1 and 2 do not really compare to 3, because when you add the FPS element it becomes a whole different type of game. They are all good (well I have not played new vegas), but comparing Fallout 1/2 to Fallout 3 is apples and oranges. When I 1st read they were redoing the series in 3d I thought they were going to butcher the game, but it turned out really good.

i have played FO3 and FNV to death, along with Oblivion (i am prepared to cut their ai a lot of slack simply because the games are great in many other ways)
i also got FO1, FO2 and FO:Tactics when i bought FO3 but i have only gone a small way through FO2 - i must admit i prefer a realtime FPS instead of a turn-based isometric, so i substituted Morrowind for these ones for the time being 'A Quest for Heaven' was a rather large and decent fan-made story mod for FO3, although mine kicked me back into the regular FO3 world when i was around 99% of the way through it - very impressive nonetheless. i do have a few weapon and utility mods running, but overall i usually grab extra quests etc. to extend the story out longer FNV Spoiler: did anyone destroy the army of securitrons, and then decide to choose the 'yes man' path in the story? i love the guy's sarcasm about how wonderful it is that you destroyed the very same assets you needed, and how they would have just gotten in the way anyway... -------------------- ![]() |

I have high hopes for Skyrim and I can believe that they'd make a Fallout 4 on that same engine. An MMO would be cool but I think Interplay is just blowing smoke and so does Bethesda. It's all down to legal battles now.

Fallout 2 > Fallout > Fallout: New Vegas > Fallout 3 > Fallout Tactics > BoS (BoS is like the retarded cousin no one mentions)

I was just about to start my first playthrough of FO3, are there any essential mods I should get? I went over to fallout 3 nexus because that's where most of the mods seem to be, but there's so many to choose from I'm not sure which to get. Is there an AIX for FO3?

yes there are a great many to choose from, but i would call a couple of them essential:
the 'Free Play After Main Quest' mod (not sure of its real name, but its file is called FreePlayAfterMQ_V05) which allows you to keep playing after the main story is ended, just like Oblivion did a UI mod whose name escapes me, but it changes the ubermassive normal font into something a bit less console-esque i would also recommend FOMM (Fallout Mod Manager) because it does a much better job of handling the mod load order etc. than the original supplied frontend tool does i also use a couple of other mods, one gives Moira, one of the traders, a larger more quickly-replenishing pile of cash (MoriaX10Cap) plus another to stop weapon degrading, yet another for a higher weight-carry limit, plus there's also 'Liberty Prime's Laser' and some other weapon addons, and another addon to clean the Potomac of radiation... like Morrowind and Oblivion, this family of games will let you activate and deactivate mods (within reason, of course) as you play without needing to start a new game - it will merely tell you that such-and-such content is no longer present, and do you wish to continue. -------------------- ![]() |

QUOTE I have high hopes for Skyrim it's out finally. i'm installing it now, let's see what they gave us to play with. i saw mention in the handbook of 'perks' so i assume this game still has some similarities to the FO3/FNV family -------------------- ![]() |

I was never really interested in the elder scrolls series (not really a fantasy fan) but after watching some game play videos, and being a fan of fallout 3 I have to say I am tempted to try it. Well, when the price drops in a year

QUOTE not really a fantasy fan me neither, but Oblivion was one gamble that paid off very well - there's not many games you can play solidly for months and still be on the first play through. since then it has been very enduring and i've played it from start to end about five times now, as well as with some good DLC and great mods. Skyrim appears to be more of the same; it's like Oblivion II with all of the best ideas taken from FO3 and FNV along the way. file structure looks the same as the previous games, meaning it is very moddable (and it comes supplied with the usual front-end tool to allow you to turn your mods on and off, etc.) - i'm still out with the jury over the menu system, but that just means i haven't gotten used to it yet. graphic texture style is a little strange but i'm only running the game in DX9 so perhaps i'm lucky it's running at all. had one crash only so far, no harm done though. -------------------- ![]() |

The Fallout series were great games. I remember getting excited about the first one coming out, based on the fact that it was made to be a spiritual successor to another great post-apocalyptic PC game, Wasteland. I was a little skeptic about how Fallout 3 might turnout, but I thought it really stayed true the humor and format of the series. (And I enjoyed Oblivion as well, so that added to the fun). I picked up Skyrim last Thursday night and been having fun with that. I've always loved these non-linear RPGs.
